***Please note: I no longer recommend this approach. Please see the updated version Mercury Detox Using Nutritional Balancing. Thank you.
Phase 1 was getting rid of my "silver" amalgam fillings which were in reality over 50% mercury -- 5,000 times more neurotoxic than lead.
Phase 2 is removing the remaining mercury from the cells and tissues of my body.
Later, phase 3 will be removing it from my brain by using more targeted items such as chlorella and cilantro extracts that cross the blood-brain barrier -- very tricky to do before phase 2 is complete. You can become quite sick because the brain typically stores less mercury than the body and detoxing with something that crosses the blood-brain barrier can cause the mercury to flood into the brain via osmosis. *See NOTE below for more info.
In this post I thought I'd share a few of the key players for phase 2.
From left in the photo:
Magnesium cell salts, 30C
Liquid B-vitamin complex
Trace mineral drops
Vitamin C powder
Modified Citrus Pectin
Now a bit about what they do and how I use them.
The core player here is Bio-Chelat, an oral chelation product (DiSodium EDTA) from Germany with well-documented clinical trials. It's designed for chronic heavy metal toxicity and can be used for long periods without side effects because of its low concentration. (Before having my fillings removed, though, I could barely use it without causing a huge headache.) Otherwise, it works gently by indirectly intensifying the body’s natural elimination mechanism of heavy metals and creating a high electro-magnetic gradient in the GI-tract which pulls heavy metal ions from the body tissue into the blood stream and excretes them via the kidneys. Because of this extra burden on the kidneys, I also use some kidney cleanse tea (not shown) to support them.
Next is Detoxitech which I discovered by accident while looking for sodium alginate. Detoxitech is from Canada and is designed to support every process used by the body to transport, detoxify, and excrete heavy metals and other toxic substances from the body. It contains a special blend of amino acids, antioxidants, special fibers, and plant extracts that protect and support the liver and kidneys as they process toxic metals and other toxins for disposal while effectively binding the toxins in the intestine, preventing their reabsorption back into the bloodstream. Not only does Detoxitech contain sodium alginate, which is an excellent chelator known for its ability to bind to heavy metals, it contains a lot more benefits in addition. Like Bio-Chelat, Detoxitech also didn't agree with me until all the mercury fillings were gone, but now it's working well.
Whole food complex vitamin C powder -- the only way I take it. This brand is from Nature's Way. Vitamin C acts as a precursor to glutathione - the most important liver antioxidant which mops up chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals (like mercury and lead and arsenic) as well as nasty free radicals. Vitamin C also stimulates the immune system (mine gets stressed when I detoxify). When I don't take it, I feel tired.
Next is magnesium in the form of homeopathic cell salts. Mercury burns up a lot of magnesium in your body. For me, the side-effect is heart palpitations. Because of magnesium in combination with trace minerals, now they're a rare occurrence. I find the 30C potency the most effective, and I like ConcenTrace liquid from Trace Mineral Research.
Another daily driver is liquid B-vitamin complex. This is a must for me. My nervous system craves this stuff, and it is the single most important supplement for my trading. This helps your body deal with stress -- and let's face it, trading can be stressful. The ONLY brand I take is from Premier Research Labs, which ironically was right up the road from me when I was in Austin. Flat out the best I've ever found.
I occasionally use Modified Citrus Pectin (PectaSol powder from Now Foods) to assist in binding the mercury and any other junk in my system. MCP is a specialized fruit polysaccharide that has been shown to increase excretion of dangerous metals such as mercury, arsenic, lead, and cadmium without removing essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, and zinc from the body. As an added benefit, it has also demonstrated success in blocking cancer cell aggregation, adhesion, and metastasis. I found Now Foods to have the cheapest price.
I use a variety of clays to help alleviate detox symptoms. The first being ObZ liquid zeolite* which I can "test" with as little as one drop. If I notice a slight change for the better within a few minutes, I know my system probably needs a little mopping up, in which case I can move onto calcium montmorillonite, powdered zeolite (not shown), bentonite, or even a foot bath with Medi-Body Bath from Premier Research Labs if I feel lousy (your feet are a main detox area). Using clay for healing is as old as the hills. I've had great luck with it. It has not only been used medicinally for hundreds of years by indigenous cultures around the planet, but has been increasingly used by practitioners of alternative medicine as a simple but effective internal cleanser to help in preventing and alleviating various health problems. Bentonite clay is made up of a high number of tiny platelets, with negative electrical charges on their flat surfaces and positive charges on their edges. When bentonite clay absorbs water and swells up, it is stretched open like a highly porous sponge. Toxins are drawn into these spaces through electrical attraction and bound.
Next, to make sure "the trash gets taken out" I use Mag07 and Planetary Herbals Triphala powder. These assist the colon. Mag07 is stabilized oxygen in a base of magnesium oxide and works great. Triphala is an ancient Ayurvedic formula that you make into tea and tastes horribly bitter but also works wonders. You may find you respond better to other products, and that's fine. Everyone is different, and these are just what work best for me and my lifestyle. But the point is, don't forget how important they are. If you don't feel well when you're trying to detoxify, 9 out of 10 times it's because you haven't emptied the trash, understand? When you start mobilizing things that your body tucked away, you can literally DIE if you don't get rid of them. It's called auto-intoxication. It's no joke.
Liquid iodine and Xeno-X are basically two sides of the same coin. They ensure that your body has enough iodine for the body to purify itself. Again, I like the ability to micro-dose with the liquid -- Xeno-X is so strong that if I take it too late in the day, I won't sleep well.
In the classic book Folk Medicine by D.C. Jarvis, MD, he explains how iodine is necessary for the thyroid gland's proper performance of its work.
"All the blood in the body passes through the thyroid gland every 17 minutes. Because the cells making up this gland have an affinity for iodine, during this 17-minute passage the gland's secretion of iodine kills weak germs that may have gained entry into the blood through an injury to the skin, the lining of nose or throat, or through absorption of food from the digestive tract. Strong, virulent germs are rendered weaker during their passage through the thyroid gland. With each 17 minutes that rolls around they are made still weaker until finally they are killed if the gland has its normal supply of iodine. If it does not, it cannot kill harmful germs circulating in the blood as Nature intended it should."
We need more doctors like this guy, not pharmaceutical pimps posing as doctors. I had one doctor try to tell me once during a time that my thyroid was out of balance that I had three choices: surgery ("which you are not a candidate for," he added arrogantly), radiation, and "pills" -- by which he meant drugs. He left out one choice: me walking out of his office, which I did much to his amazement.
Last on the list is Megahydrate. This was invented by Dr. Patrick Flanagan after 30 years of research, and was intended to replicate the properties inherent in the "glacial milk" of the rivers in the Hunza Valley where people routinely live well over 100 years of age.
"The active ingredient is Silica Hydride, the only antioxidant that does not turn into a free radical (i.e., oxidant) once it has neutralized a free radical by donating its electron. This in turn positively affect the "zeta potential" of blood cells, which is the electric potential, or charge. Increased zeta potential means more surface area for cells. Toxins, viral matter, fungi, and bacteria trapped between cells can be expunged more readily. More importantly, water enters cells more easily. Water is arguably the most vital component of anti-aging, life extension, and the removal of free radicals and waste."
This is cool stuff. I have some work to do before I start taking it -- lots of trash to take out first. This will probably have to wait for phase 3.
I hope this list can help anyone who might be facing this same challenge of removing mercury or other heavy metals.

*NOTE: I also found the following to be an excellent guide.
Chelation vs Mobilisation - What to Take and When
As a general rule, one can classify Chelating Agents into two broad categories, chelators of heavy metals and mobilisers of heavy metals, although there is clearly overlap between the two in several cases.
Chelators bind with a heavy metal and allow its excretion from the body either via the kidneys or liver, or both. Mobilisers tend to draw out heavy metals from inside the cells, from the bones and from the brain (across the blood brain barrier) that most chelating agents are not able to access).
Mobilisers are however not particularly effective at maintaining the bond with the heavy metals or at protecting the body from the adverse effects of the heavy metals they bind with and tend to redistribute the heavy metals around the body (if taken in a relatively too high dosage), and are not generally excreted very efficiently. Mobilising agents rely on the Glutathione in the body to bind with the heavy metals and carry them out of the body via the liver and digestive tract. Although some of the heavy metals mobilised are excreted from the body, the excretion rate is much lower in comparison to actual effective chelating agents. Mobilisers that cross the blood-brain barrier tend to remove heavy metals from the brain when there the concentration of heavy metals is higher in the brain than in the rest of the body, but also carry heavy metals into the brain if the concentration is higher outside the brain. This is why it is important not to take a mobilising agent at the start of a detoxification programme, and focus on chelation to start with, to ensure that the concentration of heavy metals in the body is much lower than it is in the brain, so that when you start using a mobilising agent, you are drawing heavy metals out of the brain and tissues at a controlled rate and not building up toxicity in an already toxified body nor carrying heavy metals into the brain (rather than out of it). It makes sense when using a mobilising agent to also use a chelating agent at the same time that is effective at chelating the metals released by the mobilising agent, i.e. Mercury and Arsenic usually. Otherwise heavy metals can build up from being mobilised without being well chelated out of the body. Whilst it is not strictly necessary to use a chelating agent to help 'mop up' the heavy metals released with mobilising agents, it is highly recommended to avoid adverse symptoms and effects.
Lead is not generally mobilised using mobilising agents, and this is why a slightly different chelation strategy is required for Lead, as it will take much longer to remove from the body and after the initial 'mop up' period with EDTA or other chelating agents, it may be best to pace oneself and take the chelating agent less frequently, relying on the body to naturally liberate more lead over time (or assisting the process of displacing it from the bones out with a mineral such Calcium or Strontium).
Glutathione is a weak chelating agent and there may be some reabsorption of heavy metals in the digestive tract, which is why it is recommended to take an absorbant when using a mobilising agent, and also in general, as even with bonafide chelating agents, the Glutathione pathway will still be removing heavy metals from the body via the gut. Mobilisers are best taken in conjunction with bonafide chelating agents (rather than relying on the Glutathione pathway alone), so that anything they mobilise can be more effectively bonded with an removed from the body (with the minimum of reabsorption). It is probably best to avoid the most powerful mobilisers until one has chelated for a number of months first. Mobilisers are mainly used for Mercury, which is fat-soluble (in the Methyl-form) and tends to accumulate in the cells, tissues and organs of the body. Mobilisers are generally not necessary for heavy metals such as Lead which tends to remain in the bloodstream and readily accessible compartments of the body.
A third category is a combination of the two categories of chelating agent and mobilising agent, and I have labelled it 'Mobilsing/Chelating Combination Products'. This is essentially a product that contains both chelating agent(s) and mobilising agent(s), to draw out heavy metals from the tissues and to help chelate them out of the body. This is essentially the same as taking a chelating agent with a mobilising agent. As stated above, it is probably advisable to use a chelating agent for a period of time before using a powerful mobilising agent or mobilising/chelating combination product, or unnecessariliy adverse symptoms may be experienced. Examples of each of the three categories are listed below.

* = Synthetic equivalents of natural compounds.
** = Synthetic amino acids, not naturally occurring.
^ = Treatments that tend to increase lymphatic circulation and break down waste deposits in the lymphatic system, with actual 'mobilisation' from the cells being a secondary characteristic (most probably). EM treatments tend to mobilise organic toxins more than heavy metals, but it depends which one one is referring to of course specifically.
^^ = Phosphatidyl Choline is strictly speaking not a mobilising agent for heavy metals, but it can help to clear toxins from mitochondrial membranes, usually of an organic nature, but may include small amounts of heavy metals. PC tends to increase levels of organic toxins in the blood (if there are any to be released).
* This is a great explanation of Zeolite by Gabriel Cousins, MD:
"I have come across a major breakthrough in detoxifying the human body of the carcinogens, heavy metals and other toxins, viruses, bacteria, fungi, and overall acid conditions that promote and cause disease.
"According to the EPA, 70,000 chemicals are used commercially in the U.S., 65,000 of which are potentially hazardous to our health. We live in a virtual sea of pollutants, and carry many of these toxins within us. They can be found even in unborn children. A 2004 study by the Environmental Working Group identified 287 industrial chemicals in babies' umbilical-cord blood, including 180 known to cause cancer and 217 that are toxic to the brain and nervous system.
"In my research to develop a detoxification system for prospective mothers, I recently learned about a natural detoxifier called zeolite. A naturally occurring mineral with a unique, negatively charged, crystalline structure, zeolite is formed from the fusion of lava and ocean water, and combines all four elements. It has been used for more than 800 years in Asia as a remedy for overall health and well-being, and is on the FDA's GRAS list (generally recognized as safe). Zeolite is available commercially in a purified, activated form, in the product liquid zeolite.
"The results of research and clinical reports on zeolite are very impressive:
1. Zeolite appears to prevent and may become an important treatment for cancer. In one study, 78 percent of the 65 participants with terminal cancer (many types) experienced complete remission (LifeLink Pharmaceuticals, 2005, currently not published).
2. It has a chelation-like effect in removing heavy metals (particularly mercury, cadmium, lead, and arsenic) and other toxins from the body. Preliminary results from a Duke University study of West Virginia coal miners found that liquid zeolite significantly reduced heavy metals in this population as well as in otherwise healthy adults (to be published). Heavy metals are strongly correlated with a wide range of diseases, including cancers and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's, autism, and dementia.
3. Zeolite also improves liver function, indirectly improving elimination of pesticides, herbicides, and xeno-estrogens.
4. Zeolite appears to block viral replication, and may prove to be a potent anti-viral and general remedy for all viruses. To date, 40 anecdotal cases of herpes zoster have reportedly been healed. Preliminary anecdotal case studies suggest that it may help alleviate rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and hepatitis C as well as the common cold and flu.
5. Zeolite's binding power was proven during the Chernobyl disaster, when tons of it were used to remove radioactive cesium and strontium-90 before they contaminated local water systems.
6. Zeolite creates a natural buffer in the system by establishing an optimal pH level (between 7.35 and 7.45), which in turn activates healthy brain function and a strong immune system.
7. It is an effective detoxifier for prospective parents. Anecdotal evidence and centuries of use in Asia suggest that zeolite is safe to use even during pregnancy and breastfeeding, although its safe use in pregnancy has not been proven in double-blind studies. A pilot study at the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in 2006 found that the addition of liquid zeolite to our detoxification protocol significantly reduced toxins such as heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, and depleted uranium from the 55 adults we tested. Details of this study are presented below.
8. According to testimonials, zeolite promotes a sense of well-being, clarity, and happiness. It appears to do this as a consequence of eliminating toxins and also, according to preliminary research, by increasing serotonin production. One study suggests that zeolite also helps relieve depression.
9. Anecdotal reports suggest that zeolite increases energy, immune function, and general health.
10. Zeolite neutralizes the formation of nitrosamines in the stomach. Found in processed meats, nitrosamines are one cause of stomach cancer. Another positive effect on the stomach, according to many anecdotal reports, is relief of acid reflux.
11. Testimonials suggest that zeolite captures triggering antigens, which cause allergies, migraines, and asthma, decreasing the rate and severity of these symptoms.
12. Zeolite directly absorbs free radicals and thus decreases free radical activity and damage to the body."
